Speed apps cannot reach the two places Shopify stores actually lose seconds: theme code and third-party scripts. Here is what a real diagnosis looks like, and why chasing a Lighthouse score misses the point.
Most Shopify speed advice stops at "install a speed app," which is roughly like treating a leak by buying a bigger bucket. Apps cannot reach the two places where Shopify stores usually lose their seconds: the theme code and the scripts other apps inject.
When we tear down a slow store, the same four culprits appear in almost every audit. Oversized images served at full resolution to a phone. Render-blocking scripts loaded in the head because an app's install instructions said to. Liquid loops that query collections nobody displays. And leftover code from apps that were uninstalled months ago but never cleaned out of the theme.
That last one is more common than you would think. Uninstalling a Shopify app removes it from your admin. It does not always remove the snippet it added to your theme.
A Lighthouse score is a proxy, and proxies can be gamed. Deferring every script until after load will lift the number while making the page feel worse to a real person. What matters is Largest Contentful Paint on a mid-range phone on a real connection — which is what most Gulf traffic actually is.
Measure there, fix there, and the score follows on its own.
None of this is exotic. It is just slower and less sellable than promising a number.
